Portland’s Limbo Films and agency Pollinate teamed up to send a strong message during the 2012 hurricane season with a 30-second TV spot for client Leatherman and its LED Lenser flashlight. The Limbo team was challenged to give three Portland locations a Southeastern look and feel, and had a mere one day and evening of shooting to make this modest-budget spot sing.
The individuals in the spot are “real people,” not actors… and the rain effect was achieved by spraying two water hoses into the air. The result, which feels like a highly-produced commercial, was attained in part by director/DP/shooter Gary Nolton’s use of his Arri Alexa HD camera, which is sensitive enough in low light that the LED Lenser could be utilized as the only light source in several of the frames.
